Welcome to Hotel in Florence

Dante Alighieri and the birth of the Italian language, great artists such as Giotto and Michelangelo, monuments and museums, local wars and civic virtues, Chianti and the great food, the Iively character of the people: these are just some of the reasons why the most important Tuscan city, situated on the River Arno at the foot of the Fiesole hills, is associated to such an extent with Italian national identity.

If a person thinks of Florence, this person think the "Duomo".This exceptional cathedral of Florence, with the Battistero opposite, features the large simple lines of the Gothic style typical of Florence. At first sight a harmonious whole, the impressively massive Duomo is in fact the result of numerous additions over the centuries. Building was started in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio, suspended when he died (c. 1310), and then continued on a larger scale in 1331 and again in 1357, under the direction of Francesco Talenti. In 1378 the centrai nave vault was completed, and in 1380 the si de alsles, The octagon tribunes were finished by 1421, and on these Brunelleschi's cupola was constructed between 1420 and 1436. The half-completed originai facade by Arnolfo di Cambio was demolished in 1587 and rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. The original colored marble flanks are fundamental to the magnificence of the building. When you enter through the Porta dei Canonici", the vast tribune* opens out, with three large polygonal apses, and smaller intermediate ones. Above rises the lofty octagonal drum supporting the enormous ribbed Cupola** by Brunelleschi. On the left flank is the early 15th-century richly decorated Gothic Renaissance Porta della Mandorla (Almond Door)*. In the gable, Assumption of the Virgin, a high relief by Nanni di Banco (1414-1421), and in the lunette, Annunciation, a mosaic by Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio (1491). The simple, harmonious lines ofthe Latin-cross interior create an impression of majesty and austerity, illuminated by stained glass windows by Lorenzo Ghiberti in the apses.

A staircase descends from the znd bay of the right aisle to the remains of St Reparata, the ancient cathedral demolished in 1375.

The great Cupola* by Brunelleschi, soaring to a height of 91m above the octagon, is decorated by a fresco of the Last Judgement by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari (1572-79); below, eight 16th-century statues of the apostles. To the left of the octagon is the Sagrestia delle Messe*, or Mass Sacristy: here Lorenzo the Magnificent took refuge from the Pazzi conspiracy, on the day that his brother Giuliano was killed (26 April1478). The sacristy has a bronze door* and a lunette (Resurrection*) by Luca della Robbia (1444). The climb up to the cupola (463 steps) starts from the end of the /eft aisle. It is worth it: the dome structure can be seen more dosely, and the view* from the walkway around the lantern (107m) is fantastico In the 3rd bay, equestrian memorial to Iohn Hawkwood**, painted by Paolo Uccello (1436); in the 2nd, equestrian memorial to Niccolò da Tolentino*, painted by Andrea del Castagno (1456).
