The museum, founded in 1891, features important 14th- and 15th-century Fiorentine works of sculpture, induding originals from the Battistero, the Duomo and the Campanile. On the upper floor, in the sala delle cantorie: cantoria (singing gallery) by Donatello (1433-39), with a procession of dancing putti; below, Mary Magdalen, a disturbing wood statue, one of Donatello's later works (1453-55), formerly in the Battistero; cantoria by Luca Della Robbia (1431-38), with reliefs of children singing and making music; 16 statues, formerly in niches in the Campanile, by Andrea Pisano (Sibyls and Prophets), Donatello (Habbakuk, also referred to as 'Pumpkinhead', because of the statue's baldness ; john the Baptist; three Prophets) and Nanni di Bartolo (Abraham and Isaac, partly by Donatello). Next door, in the sala delle formelle are the relief panels removed from the Campanile: the lower tier ones are by Andrea Pisano, probably partially to a design by Giotto, although the last five are by Luca Della Robbia (1439); the upper tier panels (Sacraments) are by Andrea Pisano, his school and Alberto Arnoldi. In the sala dell'Altare, altar frontal in silver and " enamel with Scenes from the Life of the Baptist, by 14th- and 15th-century Fiorentine goldsmiths, with a richly worked Crucifix in silver above.
