The treasures of Florence: BATTISTERO SAN GIOVANNI.A religious focal point and one of Florence's oldest buildings, the Battistero was described by Dante as his "bel San Giovanni" (lovely Sto lohn), lt was built between the rith and 13th centuries over Roman buildings. Its octagonal Romanesque structure, with a double tier of pilasters on white and green marble sides, is surmounted by an octagonal pyramidal roof over a cupola. The famous bronze doors, placed at the cardinal points of the cornpass, constitute a kind of large¬scale illustrated Bible. The most famous is the fast Door, opposite the Duomo, called the Porta del Paradiso (Door of Paradise) by Michelangelo. This Renaissance masterpiece by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1425-52) illustrates scenes from the Old Testament in ten panels. The originai panels were restored after being damaged in the 1966 flood, and are now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. The interior, below the octagonally segmented cupola, has a marble inlay floor and marble walls bedecked with pilasters, linteled columns and a gallery with double divided arches. The cupola shimmers with 13th¬century Byzantine-style mosaics (Last Judgement; Stories of Genesis, the Baptist and Christ), by Venetian and Fiorentine artists, induding possibly Cimabue. In the apse, other Byzantine-style mosaics by Iacopo da Torrita (1225), as well as the tomb of the anti-Pope lohn XXIII, attributed to Donatello and Michelozzo (1427).
